Zhangheng-1, a Chinese electromagnetic surveillance satellite, collected the data from orbit with cutting-edge sensors. The pumping and fly-by required precise coordination to achieve effective measurement.
When Zhangheng approached the target zone, for instance, the sensors would switch to burst mode to analyse samples every half a second, much faster than usual, to increase data resolution.
The results were “satisfactory”, the research team reported in a paper published in the latest issue of the Chinese journal Earth and Planetary Physics.

They are also working on a space debris mitigation plan for the first of two satellites to be launched by the university – the plan being how to take the satellite out of orbit once it has fulfilled its task.
That task is earthquake detection, with the first satellite (QuakeTec) analysing measuring electron density and other plasma characteristics in the ionosphere to see if precursors to earthquakes can be detected up to five days in advance.

演者はこれまで物理学を背景とした各種自然災害予測の研究を行ってきた。地震では、統計物理学を応用して臨界現象を破壊(地震)の予測に適用したり、大気電気という観点から、極端気象や認定NPO法人富士山測候所を活用する会・学術科学担当理事として、富士山頂での火山噴火予測も含め多種多様な観測を行ってきた。さらに津波波源域を電離圏の変化を用いて正確に予測する手法(津波電離圏ホールの発見)を開発した。当日はいくつかの事例を紹介したい。

However, all that could change dramatically, thanks to Professor Friedemann Freund at the NASA’s Ames Research Center.

One of the biggest problems with the animal data, Woith says, is the lack of continuous, long-term observations of animals experiencing earthquakes. "Up to now, only very few time series with animal behavior exist at all, the longest being just one year."
Without a long record, Woith said, researchers cannot be sure that their observations relate to an earthquake and not some other kind of environmental change or long-term fluctuation in the health of an animal population or its predators.

The National Polytechnic Institute (IPN, for its acronym in Spanish) will carry out the second flight to the stratosphere to study the effects caused by volcanic and seismic explosions in the country next April.
In a statement, it was specified that researchers from the Aerospace Development Center (CDA, for its acronym in Spanish) will make this flight aboard a multi-mission suborbital platform, which will also allow, in the medium and long term, to implement and validate scientific experiments based on the determination of geomagnetic variables, as well as how to perform tests with biological samples.
Mario Alberto Mendoza Bárcenas, researcher at the center, explained that the mission's objective will be to validate the new Meteorological Data Acquisition System (SADM), version 1.1 (SADM-1.1), which will include new features for missions of this type.
He added that a sensor will be placed on the equipment to study the effects derived from volcanic explosions, and it was reported that in collaboration with the UNAM, the Complutense University of Madrid and Proxima Space, prepare the Tepeu-1 mission, with the purpose of integrating a space mission from commercial components for atmospheric exploration purposes.
He explained that in the first stage will be validated, experimentally, instrumentation schemes for the acquisition and recording of meteorological variables that contribute to the reinforcement on the study of seismic precursors in the ionosphere.

A new mission of a second satellite is already planned, CSES-02, twin of the first which will be placed in the same orbit in the next years with a substantially similar instrumentation. The purpose of this second mission is to observe with two satellites, CSES and CSES-02, which pass on the same areas of the Earth at a distance of a few minutes from each other, the evolution over time of disturbances and processes related to seismic activity that can be identified as seismic precursors.

1月30日:BMKG Builds Geomagnet Station to Observe Earth Magnetic Field (Netralnews)
The geomagnet station, said Agus, is scheduled to be inaugurated in April 2018. The moment coincides with the International Geomagnet Conference which will be participated by geophysicists from various countries.
"Geophysicists from various countries, such as Japan and the United States will gather on the island of Lombok, to attend the conference and discuss the issue of seismicity," said Agus.
Hough said that the Moon and Sun do cause solid Earth tidal stresses— ripples through the Earth itself, and not the waters hitting the coastline—and could be one of the stresses that contribute in a small way to earthquake nucleation."
Some researchers have shown that "there is in some cases a weak effect, where there are more earthquakes when tidal stresses are high," she said, "But if you read those papers, you'll see that the authors are very careful. They never claim that the data can be used for prediction, because the modulation is always very small."
